PROTESTS took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, yesterday over the collapse of a garment factory on Wednesday that killed more than 300 workers to date. The death toll is thought to rise as rescue teams continue to search for survivors among the rubble.
Garment workers damaged an estimated 100 vehicles in the Mirpur, Rampura and Badda areas of the city, while thousands went on strike. They are calling for the arrest of the building's owner, Sohel Rana, who allegedly forced workers to enter the factory on Wednesday - despite severe cracks having appeared on walls on Tuesday. Employees were swiftly evacuated, but instructed to return the following day - regardless of orders from manufacturing officials that the eight-storey building should remain closed. Rana has not been found since the incident, The Guardian reports.
Brands including Primark, Mango and Matalan are found to have manufactured apparel in the building.
